Dr. Emil R. Unanue is the Paul & Ellen Lacy Professor of Pathology & Immunology at the Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Unanue is known for discovering that T cells recognize foreign antigens when they are bound to and displayed by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins on other immune cells. In recognition of his work, he has received the 1989 William B. Coley Award, the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, and was elected into the National Academy of Sciences. His current research focuses on antigen processing, autoimmune diabetes, and intracellular bacteria. Dr. Unanue has been a member of CRI’s Scientific Advisory Council since 2013.
I have been fortunate throughout my career to work with and among extremely dedicated researchers whose ultimate goal has been to understand and advance science. I am grateful that support for basic research exists and am encouraged by the promise of innovation still to come.
