Patient Story Featured at World Cancer Congress

January 14, 2015

Every two years, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) hosts a World Cancer Congress—an international event that brings cancer experts and leaders in global health together under one roof to strategize ways to reduce the human toll of cancer. This past year’s congress was held December 3-6, 2014, in Melbourne, Australia, and featured a symposium on cancer immunotherapy chaired by Jonathan Cebon, Ph.D., FRACP, who is medical director of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer & Wellness Centre in Melbourne, Australia, and a member of CRI’s clinical trials network.

Dr. Cebon opened the symposium by showing a video of Pam G., whose inspiring story we featured in our “30 Days, 30 Stories” campaign on our patient-oriented immunotherapy website, TheAnswerToCancer.org. Pam, who was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer in 2013, was treated with nivolumab, an immune checkpoint inhibitor recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of advanced melanoma, but which has shown great promise in treating lung cancer, as well.

Stories like Pam’s are showing the incredible power of immunotherapies to change lives, and we are glad that her video was able to bring this message to an international audience.
