Our cells recycle old or damaged proteins with a program known as the Ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). However, UPS activity is also linked to the growth of B cells, and at least one specific protein, Ubqln1, appears to contribute to B cell cancers such as lymphoma. Therefore, Dr. Alexandra Whiteley is characterizing the roles of Ubqln1 and other UPS-associated proteins in normal cellular recycling and in promoting cancerous behavior. Overall, she hopes to reveal new insights regarding our cellular recycling system that could then be translated into effective treatment strategies.
I have always been interested in how basic research can inform our treatment of human diseases, and I hope to generate a better understanding of how these Ubiquilin proteins work to generate new and improved lymphoma treatments.
