Supporting Underrepresented Scientists in Immuno-Oncology
The CRI Irvington Postdoctoral Fellowship to Promote Racial Diversity supports qualified young scientists from underrepresented minorities at leading universities and research centers around the world who wish to receive training in fundamental immunology and cancer immunology. Fellows train under the guidance of a world-renowned immunologist, who sponsors the fellow and prepares him or her for a productive and successful career in cancer immunology. The program will provide additional support for mentoring and career advancement to these individuals, as we work to build a more racially diverse and inclusive community of scientists working in immuno-oncology.
We invite applications from candidates who are U.S. citizens and identify as Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino/a American, or American Indian or Alaska Native.
CRI seeks hypothesis-driven, mechanistic studies in both immunology and tumor immunology that aim to directly impact our understanding of the immune system’s role in cancer.
A panel of scientists drawn from the CRI Scientific Advisory Council will rigorously evaluate each candidate, the intended sponsor and training environment, and the nature and feasibility of the proposed project.
Overview
The CRI Irvington Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is CRI's longest-standing continuous program. Postdoctoral fellowships provide support to fund and train young immunologists and cancer immunologists at top universities and research centers around the world.
Fellows work and continue their training under the guidance of a world-renowned immunologist, who mentors the fellow and prepares him or her for a productive and successful career in cancer immunology.
Fellows receive up to $186,000 over three years to cover the cost of salary, insurance, and other research-related expenses, such as travel to conferences and meetings. The institutional allowance can also be used for childcare.
Applications for this program will also be considered for the standard CRI Irvington Fellowship. No further application is required for consideration to both programs.
History & Accomplishments
Since this program’s inception, more than 1,400 young scientists have received postdoctoral fellowship awards from CRI. CRI Fellows have made groundbreaking discoveries that have laid the foundation for the field, and have gone on to lead major research programs and centers and to win some of the most prestigious awards in biomedical science, including the Nobel Prize.
More importantly, CRI Fellows have contributed to numerous research discoveries that have since resulted in lifesaving treatments for cancer, infectious diseases, and autoimmune disorders.
