Position: Associate Director, Individual Giving
The Cancer Research Institute is seeking an associate director of individual giving to join its development team.
Position Description
The associate director of individual giving will play a pivotal role in the Cancer Research Institute’s development efforts during an exciting period of innovation and discovery for the organization. As part of the development team, the associate director will be responsible for the conceptualization, development, and execution of a comprehensive Individual Giving program. The ideal candidate will have proven prior experience developing and executing an Individual Giving program, be extremely organized, have superior skills and abilities in fundraising, and work well in a fast-paced, results-oriented position. The associate director will be responsible for all aspects of Individual Giving, including identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual donors.
Responsibilities
The person in this position will:
- Develop and manage a portfolio of at least 100-150 annual donors and prospects through cultivation and engagement.
- Devise and implement donor-centric fundraising strategies to meet activity and revenue goals through portfolio planning and moves management to develop CRI’s major gift pipeline.
- Work closely with the chief development officer to understand, support, and elevate the department’s priorities and strategies
- Gain a complete understanding of CRI programs and projects in order to articulate the case clearly and persuasively
- Solicit annual gifts, both new and renewals, upgrading gifts as appropriate
- Define and implement strategies to move lower-level donors into the major gift pipeline
- As part of the development team, create and implement a stewardship strategy that effectively appreciates donors and provides appropriate recognition for their support
- Participate in prospect management meetings to determine appropriate prospects for various campaigns and the strategies to cultivate and solicit mid-level and major prospects
- Partner with the CDO and marketing and communications team members to plan, write and review appeal content and themes for CRI’s annual fundraising appeals; oversee CRI’s annual fund renewal campaign to improve CRI’s individual donor retention; plan and implement a calendar of online giving appeals; and develop and write high-impact, compelling materials and messaging as needed
- Develop pipeline strategies to retain and engage CRI donors
- Develop individual giving fundraising and prospect management reports
- Take responsibility for individual giving and portfolio-related data entry in support of measurable portfolio performance metrics and annual goals
- Oversee donor acknowledgment and recognition process, including creating digital messages and updates
- Maintain a highly collaborative relationship with other CRI departments and stakeholders
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Candidates must possess:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Five years of experience managing successful campaigns, cultivating individual gifts, developing donor strategies, stewarding donors, and developing donor research profiles
- Experience using donor database software, Raiser’s Edge preferred
- Creative strategic thinker with ability to function in a multi-faceted, results-oriented work environment, and the ability to analyze issues, identify priorities, manage projects, and make thoughtful decisions independently and as part of a team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong project management and problem-solving skills
- Proven ability in leveraging relationships and software programs (Raiser’s Edge, Excel, Donor Search, etc.) to develop a donor prospect pipeline

Compensation
Cancer Research Institute is prepared to offer the successful candidate a competitive compensation package that includes base salary starting between $80,000 and $100,000 per year, employer-paid health insurance, generous retirement benefits, and other benefits.
Work location
This position is for a full-time employee based in CRI’s headquarters in downtown Manhattan in New York City. CRI staff are currently working part of the week in office and part remotely. Proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 required.
