Dr. Tak W. Mak is the director of the Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research in the Department of Medical Biophysics at the Ontario Cancer Institute of Princess Margaret Hospital, and a professor in the Department of Immunology at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Mak is renowned for co-discovering the T cell receptor, which is what enables our T cells to target and eliminate specific threats in our body, including cancer. He has received many honors, including fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada as well as the National Academy of Sciences. His current research is focused on further characterizing cell biology under both normal and diseased conditions, and is especially concerned with the relationship between immune responses and tumor development and progression. In addition to being a member of CRI’s Scientific Advisory Council, Dr. Mak serves on the Postdoctoral Fellowship Review Committee.
My career has been focused on dissecting the mechanisms of the immune system in order to harness its power to fight diseases, particularly cancer. My team is now poised to bring new immunotherapeutic approaches to bear that will make a significant difference to patient treatment and outcomes.
